Outside, I followed the staggering figure of Tobias, moving quickly to catch up then getting in front of him so I could stop him.

“What the hell was all that, man? Have you lost your ever-loving mind?” I demanded, shoving him backwards a few steps.

“I- I don’t even know. She just makes me so, so, so angry and unsettled and upset. I don’t even know why. Did I really call her a…?”

“Yeah, you did. And you can bet your Fae you’re going to sarding apologize tomorrow. I can’t even be around you right now. Go home, I’ll catch you later. I’m going to go for a walk.”

“Be careful. The woods, man, they feel off. It’s two days from a full moon, and I swear the wolves are out tonight. Man, I need to go let my head empty.”

“Sarding straight you do. Go. Get out of here.” I stepped out of his way, my own anger and hurt at his words still too hot to let myself get closer to him. Naturally, I’m really a peacekeeper, but that doesn’t extend or apply to anyone that my phoenix would consider a threat to his mate, and I’m afraid my phoenix may try to roast him alive.

I watched as he wandered down the main path toward the village, and as soon as I knew he wasn’t going to veer off and get lost on some path and die from the cold, I took one of the side trails I’d ventured through, one that led closer to the village at the end. At this time of night, with the wind howling through the branches, nobody would be out and about.

Moving down the trail, I ducked branches and stepped over drifts until I felt I’d reached a decent ways out from civilization. Time to let my beast out. I slowly opened my mind to my phoenix, letting him come to the forefront, and felt the shimmer and change of forms to indicate I was now in my other form.

Being of Fae descent, it’s easy to let one form or the other take over. I had mastered my forms young, and my parents, fearing discovery of the phoenix colony by bands of human hunters, had moved us a great distance from the rest of the flock. By the time my sister was born, we’d set up home a long ways away from the original colony. I was able to help my sister learn to switch forms faster than I had been able to, so in only a few years we were both blending in with our human peers, hidden from the world.

It was when I was eight and my little sister was four that hunters found us. I was playing with a friend and had told her that babies couldn’t play with us, so, upset as she was, she left and switched forms to fly home rapidly. Humans who sought Fae-kind saw, and they’d followed her, tracking her to our family home then burning it down with my sister and our parents trapped within.
